Vid: Foo Fighters - Times Like These

Music, Online Media No Comments »

Last night I watched (what I believe was) the most recent episode of Jericho online and at the end of the episode, there was a very interesting acoustic song. I felt like I had heard it before but I just could not place my finger on it so I listened to it a few times but to no avail. I Googled a few of the lyrics and it turns out to be a stripped-down version of a Foo Fighters song.

I like this song so much that I’ve decided not only to share the acoustic version with you but also the original.

Enjoy.

I, am a one way motorway,
I’m the road that drives away,
follows you back home,
I, am a street light shinnin’
I’m a white light blindin’ bright
Burnin’ off and on
It’s times like these you learn to live again
It’s times like these you give and give again
It’s times like these you learn to love again
It’s times like these, time and time again
I, am a new day risin’
I’m the brand new sky
To hang stars upon tonight
I, am a little divided
Do I stay or run away
And leave it all behind?
It’s times like these you learn to live again
It’s times like these you give and give again
It’s times like these you learn to love again
It’s times like these, time and time again

Musical Interlude: Steve Earle - Warrior & Jerusalem

Music, Politics General, Online Media No Comments »

I really like Steve Earl but I often forget all about him and my fondness for his music. And then I remember again and I love it when that happens.

Warrior

This is the best time of the day—the dawn
The final cleansing breath unsullied yet
By acrid fume or death’s cacophony
The rank refuse of unchained ambition
And pray, deny me not but know me now,
Your faithful retainer stands resolute
To serve his liege lord without recompense
Perchance to fall and perish namelessly
No flag-draped bier or muffled drum to set
The cadence for a final dress parade
But it was not always thus—remember?
Once you worshipped me and named me a god
In many tongues and made offering lest
I exact too terrible a tribute
Take heed for I am weary, ancient
And decrepit now and my time grows short
There are no honorable frays to join
Only mean death dealt out in dibs and dabs
Or horror unleashed from across oceans
Assail me not with noble policy
For I care not at all for platitude
And surrender such tedious detail
To greater minds than mine and nimbler tongues
Singular in their purpose and resolve
And presuming to speak for everyman
Oh, for another time, a distant field
And there a mortal warrior’s lonely grave
But duty charges me remain until
The end the last battle of the last war
Until that ‘morrow render unto me
That which is mine my stipend well deserved
The fairest flower of your progeny
Your sons, your daughters your hopes and your dreams
The cruel consequence of your conceit

Jerusalem

I woke up this mornin’ and none of the news was good
And death machines were rumblin’ ‘cross the ground where Jesus stood
And the man on my TV told me that it had always been that way
And there was nothin’ anyone could do or say
And I almost listened to him
Yeah, I almost lost my mind
Then I regained my senses again
And looked into my heart to find
That I believe that one fine day all the children of Abraham
Will lay down their swords forever in Jerusalem
Well maybe I’m only dreamin’ and maybe I’m just a fool
But I don’t remember learnin’ how to hate in Sunday school
But somewhere along the way I strayed and I never looked back again
But I still find some comfort now and then
Then the storm comes rumblin’ in
And I can’t lay me down
And the drums are drummin’ again
And I can’t stand the sound
But I believe there’ll come a day when the lion and the lamb
Will lie down in peace together in Jerusalem
And there’ll be no barricades then
There’ll be no wire or walls
And we can wash all this blood from our hands
And all this hatred from our souls
And I believe that on that day all the children of Abraham
Will lay down their swords forever in Jerusalem

Musical Interlude: Essential Jean LeLoup

Just 4 Fun, Music No Comments »

I was just kicking back and getting a little nostalgic looking for tunes from my 20s on Youtube. When I came across some John DaWolf and thought to myself this needs to be posted.

For the most part it’s French so deal with it. Its great music from my home province of Québec.

It’s even got me missing home just a little bit.

Jean Leloup - Johnny Go

Jean Leloup - I lost my baby

JEAN LELOUP - Isabelle (J’te détèste)

And a bonus clip. Lets see you can piece it together!

Musical Interlude: Bad Religion - Generator

Music, Pop Culture No Comments »

I have always had a powerful and visceral connection to music and by music I mean punk rock/hard-core and not really anything outside of that. Sure I like all sorts of music but the only music I feel some sense of emotional connection to is punk rock.

Anyhow this post isn’t a deconstruction of my psychological relationship to punk rock or related adolescent angst and rebellion. It’s really just a lazy quick music post.

Bad Religion has been one of my all-time favorite bands and continues to be today. As far as punk rock goes you can’t get much more intelligent lyrically or competent musically.

I’ve always really resonated with the lyrics in this song I’m not sure why but they somehow manage to cut deep into my soul.

And with that, enjoy.

Like a rock,
like a planet,
Like a fucking atom bomb,
I’ll remain unperturbed by the joy and the madness
that I encounter everywhere I turn
I’ve seen it all along
In book and magazines
like a twitch before dying
like a pornographic sea
there’s a flower behind the window
there’s an ugly laughing man
like a hummingbird in silence
like the blood on the door
it’s the generator
oh yeah, oh yeah, like the blood on my door
wash me clean and I will run
until I reach the shore
I’ve known it all along
like the bone under my skin
like actors in a photograph
like paper in the wind
there’s a hammer by the window
there’s a knife on the floor
like turbines in darkness
like the blood on my door
it’s the generator

Musical Interlude: The Truth Has Failed

Music, Site News No Comments »

Ok things are now stable once again on the blog. Unfortunately I’ve lost numerous customizations and tweaks to my layout. Including somewhere between 6 and 8 weeks of reader comments, a few static pages of content and of my links and Blogroll.

Fortunately all of my posts have been recovered. So now its just a matter of cleaning up stuff and recreating my links and blogroll.

Time for a brake, so enjoy this stereotype bending tune.
